Compress files in Windows XP

It is very easy to compress files and folders if you work with NTFS (New Technology File System).

1. Right-click on the file/folder to compress and select Properties.

2. Select Advanced options and mark the Compress content to save space in disk box. By this way you can reduce ts size up to 10 times.

If you want to identify the compressed files with another color:

1. Go to Windows Start, Control Panel.

2. Click on Appearance and Themes, select Folder Options and go to the View tab.

3. Mark the Show with other color the compressed box or ciphered NTFS files.

Note: Once this is done, the system will now decompress each time the file is opened. If we abuse of this feature, the performance can decrease. So we recommend to compress only old files or rarely used ones.
