Reset Password in Windows Vista

The situation is critic.

PC with Windows Vista Home Premium.

The registered user with administrative privileges forgot his password! As it is known, the Administrator account  in Windows is not changeable as default, what makes impossible to access as the administrator and reset its password.

But someone found the solution, and in a very effective way! Lets see how….

Requirements:

Windows Vista Home Premium DVD (or any other version)

The first thing you should do is to boot with the DVD and when you reach the installation screen , click on the last option System Recovery.

By entering this link, some options will appear, click in Command Console (normally the last one).

A command screen of Windows NT opens where you have to put the following:

  1. C: (ENTER)

  2. CD WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 (ENTER)

  3. Once we reach the SYSTEM32 directory put this commands in the following order:

ren sethc.exe sethc-org.exe

copy cmd.exe sethc.exe

  1. Exit the console by writing EXIT followed by an ENTER.

  2. Take the installation CD and restart the PC to start with Vista normally.

  3. In the Welcome screen press the shift key five times in a row. Another console screen will appear, write the following:

CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 (ENTER). A window will open with the names of the registered users in Vista.

  1. We choose the user from the list and in the lower part of the screen a option to RESET the password will appear. Once we select it, a form to put a new one will appear. We can leave it in blank or write a new one.

  2. Accept the changes and exit the console by writing EXIT.

  3. Once you see the Welcome screen of Windows Vista , we choose the user and write the new password (in you left it in blank just ENTER)

It is also possible from the users and passwords form (Step 7) to create a new user with Administrator privileges (joining it to the group “Administrators”). By creating this new account if we have any similar problem, we can start with this one the Windows session, go to control panel, user accounts, and reset the password of the user with problems.

Note: This case applies in a installation in C:, if Windows Vista is installed in another drive( D:, E:, etc) substitute it for the correct one.
